VOCE Competition

VOCE, founded in 1971 and sponsored by MTAC, is an acronym representing the following categories within the annual competition:

Vocalists
Orchestral instrumentalists
Chamber groups, and
Ensembles

The goal of the VOCE program/competition is to offer performance opportunities and public recognition to outstanding vocalists, orchestral soloists, chamber music groups and ensembles. This is a local and state competition open to the students of MTAC teachers. State winners will receive cash prizes and the opportunity to perform at the state MTAC Convention. There is also a non-competitive part of this event, which includes other musical ensembles, such as duets for piano, piano-duos, sonatas for piano and other instruments.

Audition Information
1) Original scores are to be provided to the judges by each performer. No photocopies allowed. Photocopies (for the students or the judges) will result in immediate disqualification.
2) Each contestant or group of contestants will be allowed nine (9) minutes to perform. The judges may choose whether or not to hear the cadenza(s), and/or if they wish to stop a contestant if they have exceeded the time limit.
3) Judges may select a First, Second and Third place winner for each category. Ties are allowed. The judging panel reserves the right not to award a 1st place Winner in every category.
4) The Judges’ decisions are FINAL.
5) Awards
a. At the end of the day, each performer will receive a Certificate of Participation and/or other awards.
b. Winners and Honorable Mentions will be announced immediately following the completion of the MTAC-San Diego VOCE Competition Festival.

Repertoire
All repertoire must include at least one piece from the standard literature for that category. No transcriptions, arrangements or abridged versions will be accepted. Selections written with piano accompaniment must be performed with a pianist. Unaccompanied solo works are acceptable entries if paired with a concerto.

Vocalists
Choose three selections composed in the original languages, specifically to include one work in English and two works in languages other than English. Everything is to be memorized.

Solo Instrumentalists
Choose two contrasting works, representing different musical eras, styles and tempi. At least one piece must be a concerto or the equivalent (with orchestral accompaniment). All solo pieces must be memorized, including Sonatas.

Chamber Music/Ensembles
Choose two (substantial) contrasting movements, selected from the standard repertoire, representing two different musical eras. Major sonatas for piano and one other instrument (either a wind or stringed instrument) may be considered an Ensemble piece if the piano part is written as an equal to the other and not considered an accompanying part. Sonatas performed within the Ensemble category should be performed with music.
