REGISTRATION DEADLINE: February 6, 2019 - Extended!

The Duo Festival gives students a golden opportunity to play and hear some of the delightful duet music of the piano repertoire in a recital format. Recitals showcase the skills of students grouped according to age, with performers starting as young as 5 and continuing to those in high school and college.

Students may choose music for four hands for one piano, or music for two pianos. Transcriptions or arrangements are permitted. No popular repertoire or improvisations will be accepted. Performance by memory is NOT required. If the team is using music, an additional copy is required for the judges. Photocopies will result in a team’s disqualification.

Trophies will be awarded to 1st place duo teams, rosette ribbons to 2nd and 3rd place teams, and all participants receive a certificate. Younger students must enter in the higher age category if paired with an older student. Last year’s place winners may enter the same division, if age is appropriate for the category, but cannot repeat last year's repertoire.

Categories are based on the student's age on the day of the event.
When teams have longer pieces they are stopped when the time is up with no penalty.

Category I: Ages 5 - 9 (limit 3 minutes)
Category II: Ages 10 - 12 (limit 4 minutes)
Category III: Ages 13 - 15 (limit 5 minutes)
Category IV: Ages 16 - high school (limit 7 minutes)
Category V: College (limit 7 minutes)
Category VI: Student & Teacher (limit 3 minutes)*
Category VII: Student & Adult (limit 3 minutes)*

*Categories VI & VII are non-competitive, designed to provide a performance opportunity for students of any age, who may not have a partner. Students in this category will receive judges' comments and a participation award. The teacher does not pay the entry fee.

New or Contributory members must have joined the San Diego branch on or before January 2, 2019 in order to participate in the Piano Duo Festival.
